An apparatus for continually diverting a representative sample of particulate material from a moving stream comprises a flow tube 12 having sampling nozzle 15 extending into the stream of material, means 19, 27 for introducing a continuous flow of fluid in the flow tube and a means 22 responsive to a differential in pressure between the fluid in the flow tube and that in the moving stream and arranged to operate a control valve 27 in order to maintain the pressure in the tube equal to that in the moving stream. The flow tube 12 is mounted within a sealed housing 10 which is located within a conduit 11 through which the particulate material is flowing either under gravity or by pump pressure. The interior of the housing is supplied with an atmosphere of dry nitrogen gas via the control valve 27 and pipe 19, the gas flowing through the pipe 12 via an open end 13 thereby entraining the particulate material with it. By means of pipes 23, 24 and the differential pressure control device 22 controlling the valve 27 the pressure of the gas is maintained the same as that in the conduit 11. |
