In an optical cable with tension-resistant cable sheath, the cable core consists of a flexible support tube (3, 4) in which a structure composed of stranded optical fibres (2) is arranged about a central element (1). When the cable is stretched, the diameter of the central element (1) is reduced so that the stranded optical fibres (2) can assume a smaller reference diameter without being impeded therein by the central element (1). Conversely, the diameter of the central element (1) and the reference diameter of the optical fibres (2) are increased in the case of endwise compression or shrinkage of the cable. <IMAGE>
