PURPOSE:To omit an erasion-only head and to erase the recorded signals when video signals are recorded by revolving a rotary cylinder containing (m) pieces of magnetic heads at a frequency (n) times as high as the frame frequency and therefore giving the time compression to the input video signals down to 1/N for each field period. CONSTITUTION:The rotary magnetic heads 6 and 6' which record and reproduce video signal are mounted on a cylindrical rotary head cylinder with an angle space of 180 deg., stuck to each other and held by piezoelectric elements. A magnetic tape is wound round the head cylinder at a prescribed angle and scanned at a prescribed speed for production of the oblique discontinuous tracks. Then the head cylinder is revolved at a frequency (n) times as high as the frame frequency by means of semiconductor memories 11 and 11' and a 1/3 dividing circuit 17, etc., when the video signals are recorded. So that either one of both heads 6 and 6' has its tape surface scanned twice or more by the head cylinder for each field period of input video signals. At the same time, these video signals undergo the time compression down to 1/N for each field.
