<p>An escape device uses multiple discardable cable spools. The escape device casing is fitted to a window ledge by front and rear locking feet (26, 28). A person attempting to escape uses hand grips (24) to position himself below the roller spool (50) for the cable (52) and at a position spaced from the outside wall of the building. As he descends, his rate of descent is controlled by friction brakes (90, 92) within the casing (2). Upon reaching the ground, a door (42) in the casing (2) can be opened and the cable spool (50) removed and replaced with a fresh cable spool, thus eliminating the necessity for rewinding the old cable.</p> |
