The aim is to provide a simple, compact measurement method, which operates in a contactless manner, for determining the position of the piston of a vibration damper, gas spring or hydropneumatic spring system, and in this case to provide an arrangement which is favourable in terms of production engineering. A change in components which are important in terms of strength is avoided. Provided as measuring elements for the purpose of level measurement are an element which fixes the level range for the purpose of signal generation and at least one Hall sensor. The measurement section extends in this case over the entire choke of the piston and one of the measuring elements is arranged at a distance from the cylinder and capable of moving in a relatively axial fashion with respect thereto.
