PURPOSE:To efficiently produce the title m-hydroxybenzyl alcohol for a long period, by electrolytically reducing m-hydroxybenzoic acid in an aq. acidic soln., and the cleaning the inside of an electrolytic cell with an alcoholic solvent to reactivate the electrode. CONSTITUTION:m-Hydroxybenzoic acid is electrolytically reduced in an aq. acidic soln. contg. about 5-20% m-hydroxybenzoic acid at about 20-70 deg.C and at about 5-30A/dm<2> current density by using a cathode of zinc, etc., and m-hydroxybenzyl alcohol is obtained. The electrolytic reduction is carried out batchwise, and the inside of the electrolytic cell is cleaned with an alcoholic solvent after several batches are finished. Lower alcohols having the molecular formula of CnH2n+1OH [(n) is 1-5 integer] are preferably used as the alcoholic solvent. By this method, the accumulation of tar decomposition products on the electrode surface is prevented, and the electrolytic reduction can be stably and efficiently carried out for a long period.
