The system has a measuring plane divided into sectors whose apices lie onthe wanted point. Optoelectronic devices are used to detect deviations in thebeam from the wanted centre point into the sectors. The deviation for any sector is made audible. Each sector has its own characteristic tone. The light beam may be focussed. The factor that distinguishes one tone from another may be frequency, amplitude, mark/space ratio, mark or space.
