<p>Devices for elevationally moving a platform are complex in construction, bulky, tend to wear prematurely, are unable to maintain the platform at a preselected attitude, and tend to move jerky. A lifting mechanism (44) having an elevationally movable shaft (50) driven by a motor (86) is provided for elevationally moving a platform (34). A bearing member (60) supports the platform (34) for universal pivotal movement on the shaft (50), and first and second guide assemblies (118, 120) maintain the platform (34) at a preselected attitude relative to the vehicle frame (12), guide the platform (34) for substantially straight elevational movement, and prevent undesirable forces from being applied to the shaft (50). Thus, the problems related to premature wear and failure, jerky operation, platform attitude maintenance, size and complexity are reduced. The elevating device (14) is particularly suited for use on an automatic guided vehicle (10).</p> |
