The hand-held device has a tool-holding fixture (1) which is fitted with different tools for different uses, the tools requiring specific modes of operation of the hand-held device for optimum working. For this purpose, the tools have different contours on their insertion shank (41). A sensing device, consisting of at least one controlling element (16) and slide (12), scans the respective contour and initiates a corresponding switching process to obtain the suitable mode of operation. <IMAGE>
