On a support (10) connected to a device generating a subatmospheric pressure, a suction element (11) is pivotably mounted. The suction element (11) is provided with suction openings and is spring-loaded in its pivoting-out direction. In the swung-out position, the suction openings of the suction element (11) are located directly on the topmost sheet, to be separated, of a sheet stack (23). By applying a subatmospheric pressure, the topmost sheet is drawn up, which fills the suction openings of the suction element (11). As a result the subatmospheric pressure increases further so that the suction element (11) is drawn against the carrier (10). In the process the front region of the topmost sheet is peeled off the sheet stack (23) and is transferred to a conveying device (21) for drawing the separated sheet off the sheet stack (23). <IMAGE>
