PURPOSE:To produce alpha-keto acids useful as intermediates for many medicines, agricultural chemicals, polymerization initiators, etc., including amino acids, by reacting an organic halogen compound with water and carbon monoxide in the presence of an inorganic base and Pd-containing catalyst in the one stage. CONSTITUTION:An organic halogen compound expressed by the formula R<1>X (R<1> is aryl, alkenyl or heterocyclic group; X is halogen, e.g. iodobenzene, etc., is reacted with 2 equiv. carbon monoxide and 1 equiv. water in the presence of an inorganic base, e.g. hydroxide, oxide, carbonate, etc., of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal and pallladium-containing catalyst, e.g. PdCl2[P(CH3)3]2, etc to afford the aimed alpha-keto acidsd expressed by the formula R<1>COCOOH, e.g. benzoylformic acid, etc., in one stage. Thereby the readily available halide is readily carbonylated in one stage to induxtrially and advantageously affored the alpha-keto acids in one stage. |
