A process for the production of a second alkyl phenol by transalkylation of an alkyl phenyl ether or a first alkyl phenol comprises passing a mixture of the first alkyl phenol or of the alkyl phenyl ether with phenol itself in the vapour phase over a catalyst of alumina. The most preferred temperature in the first case is 510‹ C. and in the second case 380‹ C. The molar ratios of alkyl phenol or alkyl phenyl ether to phenol itself in the feed are preferably from 1:3 to 2:1. The examples describe the preparation of o, m, and p-cresols from xylenols; cresols and xylenols from 2,3,5,6-tetramethyl phenol; o-cresol from anisole; and 2-ethyl phenol from phenetoles. |
