PURPOSE:To provide the titled controlling agent containing an N-(2',6'- dialkylphenyl)maleimide derivative, having excellent safety of fish and shellfish and high dispersion stability and useful for antifouling ship bottom paint, antifouling fishing net paint, etc. CONSTITUTION:The titled controlling agent contains 10-20wt% compound of formula (R and R' are lower alkyl; X and X' are H, halogen or lower alkyl). The controlling agent has excellent effect to inhibit the growth of shellfish and algae attaching to installations in sea water such as ship bottom, fishing net, buoy, etc., constructions in water such as ancillary facility of dam, bridge pier, etc., inlet channel for cooling water of e.g. heat-exchanger, etc. It has low toxicity to fish and shellfish and excellent formulation stability. The controlling agent is used in the form of paint, solution, emulsion, etc. In the case of using as a paint, the compound of formula is compounded with a film-forming agent such as oil varnish, synthetic resin, natural or synthetic rubber, etc.
