Prodn. of polyethylene articles which combine high tensile strength and high modulus with low creep is carried out by conventional processing of a polyethylene feedstock with a viscosity-ave. mol. wt. of at least 500,000 kg/kmol., the novel feature being that the polyethylene used has 2-20 alkyl side-chains per 1000 C atoms. The conventional processing involves mixing the polyethylene with solvent(s), converting to a shaped article contg. solvent(s) at above the dissolving pt., cooling to form a solid gel-like article and then drawing at elevated temp., with or without complete or partial removal of solvent. |
