NEW MATERIAL:A catechol derivative expressed by formula I (R1 and R2 are same of different 1-6C alkyl, provided that both are not methyl at the same time). EXAMPLE:4-Ethyl-1,2-diacetoxybenzene. USE:Various agriculatural chemicals and medicines having pharmacolgical activity and intermediate therefor, particularly useful as a preventing and treating agent for progress of central nervous retrograde diseases. PREPARATION:For example, homocatechol is reacted with a lower fatty acid in the presence of an acid catalyst to provided a compound expressed by formula I (R1 is methyl). When R1 is other than the methyl group, a compound expressed by formula II (n is 1 or 2; R3 is H or 1-4C alkyl; R4 is H or 1-3C alkyl) is brought into contact with a reducing reagent and hydrogenated to give a compound expressed by formula III, which is then heat-treated with HCl, etc., in a solvent, e.g. acetic acid, etc., to provided a product. The resultant product is then treated in the same manner as in the method for synthesizing the above-mentioned compound expressed by formula I (R1 is methyl) to afford the compound expressed by formula I.
