PURPOSE:To retrieve a layout memory less in information and to rapidly analize the layout of a document by previously converting a document whose character describing on paper are uncertain into image information by means of a scanner and storing information formed by compressing the image information in the memory. CONSTITUTION:The image information for a document which is photoelectrically converted by a photoelectric conversion part 1 is stored in an image memory and successively stored also in a shift register 2. At then time of storing the image information in the shift register 2, prescribed compression, e.g. when any significant information '1' exists in the image information consisting of 8 bits, layout information '1' is formed as the substitute of the image informa tion of 8 bits and written in the layout memory 4. Various control operations are executed by a layout memory writing control part 5. A document constitu tion analyzing part 6 analyzes the layout of the document based the layer information read out from the memory 4. Consequently, a document area on paper can be rapidly extracted.
