PURPOSE:To eliminate the turbulence of a reproducing signal at the time of reproduction, and to decrease mis-tracking by inhibiting the recording by a head for forming an imcomplete track at the time of start and end of multi- system recording. CONSTITUTION:The titled recorder is constituted so that after multi-system recording has been started, among (n-1) (n is an integer of >=3) pieces of rotary heads Ra, Rb, La and Lb which are brought into contact with a recording medium, recording by (n-2) pieces of rotary heads which are preceding and rotating is inhibited, and also, before the multi-system recording is ended, among (n-1) pieces of rotary heads Ra, Rb, La and Lb, recording by (n-2) pieces of rotary heads which are succeeding and rotating can be recorded. In such a way, at the time of start and end of the multi-system recording, it can be prevented that an incomplete track in which one track portion is not recorded is formed, a tape pattern becomes complete, and at the time of reproduction, a satisfactory reproducing signal is obtained, and the generation of mis-tracking is suppressed.
