PURPOSE:To obtain a high contrast ratio by using cholesteric-phase liquid crystal and uniformly orienting liquid crystal molecules by the liquid crystal molecule orientation control force on the interface of a substrate. CONSTITUTION:Cholesteric-phase liquid crystal 5 consisting of steroid liquid crystal is enclosed in a cell, where orienting films 3 are stuck to surfaces of transparent electrodes 2 on glass substrates 1, to constitute a panel. When an electric field is applied to drive this liquid crystal display element, the molecule orientation control force due to liquid crystal molecule orienting films 3 act from the upper substrate through the lower substrate because of a narrow panel gap, and thereby, all liquid crystal molecules 5 resolve the helical structure and are uniformly oriented in parallel with, perpendicularly to, and obliquely to substrates 1. The thickness of the layer of cholesteric-phase liquid crystal 5 whose orientation is controlled by the interfacial interaction between liquid crystal 5 and liquid crystal molecule orienting films 3 on surfaces of substrates 1 must be 1/3 or more of the thickness of the whole of the liquid crystal layer. Thus, a high contrast ratio is obtained.
