PURPOSE:To prevent erroneous recognition by setting the light transmittance of a light shielding film to 0.3-1.0% and driving a device in a display pattern part in accordance with positive display type. CONSTITUTION:An oriented film 3A is formed on an electrode 2A formed on a substrate 1A, and an electrode 2B, a light shielding film 4 having 0.1-1.0% light transmittance on a part other than the display pattern part, and an oriented film 3B are successively formed on the other substrate 1B. These two substrates 1A and 1B are so arranged that respective electrode surfaces face each other, end nematic liquid crystal to which bicolor coloring matters are added is charged between them to form a liquid crystal layer 6, thus forming a liquid crystal cell. A pair of polarizing films are arranged on both faces of this liquid crystal cell, and their axes of polarization are so set than the liquid is intercepted in the part to which a voltage is applied. Oriented films are formed to have about 90 deg. twist. Thus, a high contrast is kept and erroneous recognition is prevented.
