PURPOSE:To prevent input mistakes owing to misreading, misunderstanding, etc., of keys by reading and inputting words to be translated through an optical reading part. CONSTITUTION:When the words to be translated corresponding to the words or phrases of another language are displayed via an electronic dictionary, the words to be translated and described on an original 14, etc., are supplied through an optical reading part 5 including a light source 5a for illumination of the original 14, etc., and a photoelectric conversion sensor 5a which converts the reflected light received from the original 14 into electric signals. In such a way, a language to be translated is inputted and a translating part inputs the corresponding translated language based on the reading results of the part 5. For instance, the translated language includes the meaning of words and the necessary information on a dictionary of phonetic symbols, etc. A display panel 12 displays the translated language containing said information and received from the translating part. Thus the language to be translated is optically inputted and therefore the input mistakes can be avoided.
