PURPOSE:To miniaturize a device by providing an input/output means according to the number of configurations of input/output signals, selecting an input/output means according to a coupled external equipment, and making it participate in data transmission. CONSTITUTION:A multiplex transmitter 2 which is connected to a common signal line 1 and the external load equipment is provided with a communication control part 21 equipped with a CPU 21A, a ROM 21B, etc., a function allocation setting switch 30, etc., and the states of a switch 30o corresponding to operation input signals Di and Ai and output signals D0 and A0 are stored in the ROM 21B. Then an operator switches the switch 30 according to the kinds and number of devices to be coupled and when input/output data are transmitted, a control part 21 refers to a table in the ROM 21B according to the state of the switch 30 to access an output circuit 22 and an input circuit 23.
