PURPOSE:To protect a recording head more satisfactorily, by returning the recording head to a home position at a velocity higher than a scanning velocity for printing after a power switch is turned off, and stopping the supply of source power after completion of an operation of a clogging preventive means. CONSTITUTION:Completion of recording is detected by the end of recording data, then an approaching action at an intermediate velocity is performed, the position of an ink jet unit 20 is detected by a microswitch 15, and the unit 20 is stopped. The ink jet unit 20 thus stopped is stopped facing a head-cleaning unit 22, and contaminants on a head surface arising from an ink mist are cleaned, whereby a series of recording steps are completed. On reception of a returning command, the unit 20 is returned in the direction of a home position at a velocity of about 20 times the recording velocity. When a power switch is turned off during recording, the recording is immediately stopped, the unit 20 is stopped, and is returned to the home position under such a control as to take a trapezoid locus on a diagram. After an operation of a clogging preventive unit 21 is completed, an AC line is turned off.
