PURPOSE:To effectively operate an electronic camera, by setting loadably/ unloadably freely a small capacity solid memory which stores a picture signal of one picture plane, and a large capacity non-solid memory for the picture signal stored in the solid memory, on a device. CONSTITUTION:When the optical image of an external field is projected on an image pickup element 4 via a lens 3, the optical image is converted to an electrical picture signal, and the picture signal is supplied to a monitor 10 via the contact (a) of a change over switch 11, and is displayed on the screen of the monitor. At this time, by turning ON a release switch 15, a system controller 14 is driven, and a control signal synchronized with a vertical synchronizing signal VD is supplied to change-over switches 8 and 11. And when the signal VD falls, a signal of one frame stored finally on a memory 7 circulates via a contact (b), and an image is fixed. And in a case that a recording part 2 is loaded on an image pickup part 1, the signal via a D/A converter 9 is sent to the recording part 2, and a frozen picture signal of one frame is recorded on the memory 7, then, it is recorded on a recording disk 20.
