PURPOSE:To provide excellent durability to the titled medium by forming a protective layer consisting of an intermediate layer and org. lubricating agent onto a perpendicular magnetically anisotropic film consisting of partial oxide of iron or iron and cobalt. CONSTITUTION:This perpendicular magnetic recording medium consists of the perpendicular magnetically anisotropic film consisting of the partial oxide of Fe or Fe-Co, the intermediate layer formed on the surface of said anisotropic film and the org. lubricating agent layer formed on the surface of the intermediate layer. The intermediate layer combines the perpendicular magnetically anisotropic film and the org. lubricating agent layer by a chemical bond. Since the perpendicular magnetically anisotropic film of the recording medium is made of the partial oxide of Fe or Fe-Co in the above-mentioned, said film has the higher wear resistance than the wear resistance of a thin magnetic film of a Co-Cr alloy, etc., and the thin magnetic film is formable at the lower substrate temp. In addition, there are less inter-restrictions of the perpendicular magnetically anisotropic and the underlying soft magnetic film in the case of using the perpendicular magnetically anisotropic film as two-layered structure provided with the soft magnetic film beneath said film. A necessary friction characteristic is imparted to the recording medium and the wear of a head is prevented by the org. lubricating agent layer.
