In the case of the method for controlling an electric motor (10) which is thermally loaded differently, said electric motor (10) is provided with a temperature sensor (5). The physical state change of the temperature sensor (5) is evaluated by an electronic circuit (7, 8). The electronic circuit (7, 8) acts on a motor drive unit (9) as a function of this evaluation in such a manner that the cooling-down time of the electric motor (10) between the periods during which current flows in it is influenced. This method allows an electric motor which is designed for a mean operating case to be operated in its optimum power range and to be protected reliably against overloading.
