PURPOSE:To clean a magnetic disk medium surface in forward movement and to conduct a recording/reproduction test in backward movement by moving a magnetic head reciprocally on the magnetic disk medium surface when the magnetic disk medium is tested. CONSTITUTION:The magnetic disk medium 1 for information recording and reproduction is rotated and the magnetic disk is moved from the inner peripheral side to the outer peripheral side to remove dust from the magnetic medium surface and thus clean the magnetic disk medium surface. Then while the magnetic head 3 is moved from the inner peripheral side of the magnetic disk medium 1 to the outer peripheral side, information is recorded and reproduced to conduct the test. Thus the dust is removed, so when the magnetic head 3 takes the recording/reproduction test in the forward movement, the generation rate of an error due to the dust is reduced and the production rate of defectives decreases.
