PURPOSE:To develop a metal fiber-reinforced metallic composite material excellent in wear resistance, toughness, thermal conductivity, and adhesive strength between metal fiber and matrix metal, by compounding a molten matrix metal with a high-temp. compact composed of metal fiber whose surface alone is nitrided. CONSTITUTION:A fiber compact 1 of about 10% fiber volume percentage constituted of the metal fiber 2 of about 50mu diameter and about 5mm length composed of meals such as Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, alloys thereof, or heat- resisting alloys having Fe, Co, Ni, etc., as bases, whose hardnesses can be improved by nitriding, it prepared. The above compact 1 is nitrided by means of gas nitriding, salt bath nitriding, soft nitriding, etc., so that a high-hardness metal nitride layer is formed on the surface of the metal fiber. The fiber compact 1 which is formed into high-temp. condition by the nitriding treatment is put into a mold cavity 4 of a metal mold 3, and the matrix metal such as molten Al, is poured into the above cavity 4, which is then cooled and solidified while being pressurized by means of a plunger 6. In this way, the metal fiber- reinforced metallic composite material 1' can be manufactured.
