PURPOSE:To perform automatic inspection with high accuracy regardless of a rolling direction, by making uniform the brightness of a part to be measured with the change in the rolling direction of a can lid due to the rotation of a turntable and detecting the boundary part of a compound on the shoulder side thereof. CONSTITUTION:The boundary part 11 of the compound 10 applied to the curl part of the can lid 2 placed on a turntable 1 on the shoulder side thereof is illuminated by either one of lights 4, 5 and the illuminated part is photographed by a camera 3 to be converted to an image signal. At this time, the compound 10 and the ground metal part of the can lid 2 respectively become white and black images, and the position of the boundary part 11 of the compound 10 on the shoulder side thereof is operationally processed. The detection value thereof is read on a recorded monitor picture by a scale. Next, the turntable 1 is rotated by required quantity and the same detection is performed. At this time, the lights 4, 5 are alternately changed over each time the turntable 1 rotates by 90 deg. to always illuminate in the almost same direction with respect to a rolling direction and the clear image of the boundary line is obtained.
