NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (R is ethyl, isopropyl or cyclopropyl; Z is O or S) and its acid addition salt. EXAMPLE:2-Methyl-3-( 5'-isopropyl-5'-methyl-4'-oxoimidazolidin-2'-yl )-(Z)-2-buten oic acid. USE:A herbicide. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be produced by reacting an imidazolinone derivative of formula II with sodium cyanoborohydride under acidic condition with hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, etc., in a lower alcohol solvent at 0 deg.C-room temperature for 10min-5hr.
