An aqueous dispersion which contains an acidic trivalent metal compound, with the metal being iron or aluminium or a mixture thereof, and silicon dioxide of fine particle size, with the atomic ratio between silicon and trivalent metal being 1.5-30:1, or a reaction product of this compound and silicon dioxide, can be used for coating purposes as corrosion inhibitors or adhesion-promoting agents, with it being possible to use a phosphating treatment or a treatment without flashing.
