PURPOSE:To obtain the titled composition, consisting of a specific carbonaceous substance as well as carbon precursor and capable of readily and stably producing a large-sized carbonaceous material having a high strength and density without cracking. CONSTITUTION:Coal tar and a nitrating agent, e.g. HNO3, etc., are heat-treated at >=400 deg.C in a short time or coal tar is heat-treated at >=400 deg.C and the formed optically anisotropic microspheres are separated and recovered by solvent extraction to provide (A) a carbon precursor having >=92wt% carbon content, 15-35% softening deformation ratio and <=40mum average particle diameter. (B) 5-50wt% carbonaceous substance, e.g. graphite powder, having >=95wt% carbon content, <=5% softening deformation ratio and <=40mum average particle diameter is blended with the component (A). Thereby a raw material composition capable of providing a large-sized carbonaceous material, moldable without using a binder component, having a small amount of emitted volatile matter from a raw material molded article and low shrinkage factor of the molded article in producing the carbonaceous material, small temperature difference between the central part and the surface part of the molded article in the carbonization process and excellent strength as well as density characteristics is obtained. |
