A reciprocating piston internal combustion engine with direct fuel injection is demonstrated, in which deflection of the fuel jet occurs only during the starting and warm-up phase. In the piston (3) of the internal combustion engine, at least one cylindrical bore (5) with stepped diameter is arranged, which opens into the combustion chamber recess (4) with an orifice (6) of smaller diameter than that of the bore (5), the interior being connected to the combustion chamber (10) by a gas port (9). A bimetal element (11) and a jet deflector pin (7) are fitted in this bore. In the starting and warm-up phase the deflector pin is situated in the area of the fuel jet and causes the particles striking it during injection to be deflected far from the still cold combustion chamber wall. Once the engine reaches its operating temperature, the deflector pin (7) is retracted from the combustion chamber recess by a bimetal element reacting to heat and contracting, and then lies with its end face even with the inner surface of the combustion chamber space, so that there is no interference with injection and combustion (Fig. 1). <IMAGE>
