A vane pump comprises a rotor 4 mounted eccentrically in a cylindrical chamber of a housing 1, 2. The rotor 4 carries a plurality of radially extending retractable vanes 11a-11c housed in radially extending slots 12a-12c. A pair of retainer plates 15a, 15b are rotatably mounted at opposite axial ends of the chamber. Each retainer plate 15a, 15b cooperates with pins 13 or cams (26, 27, Fig. 7) to control the radially outward displacement of the vanes 11a-11c. The pressure in the spaces between the radially inner ends of the vanes 11a-11c and the radially inner ends of the slots 12a-12c is controlled to reduce the force subsisting between the vanes 11a-11c and the retainer plates 15a, 15b. <IMAGE>
