A measuring device is provided which can advantageously be used, in particular, in length measuring devices such as height measuring devices, length measuring machines and incremental position pick-ups (encoders) (displacement sensors). Short overall lengths are achieved even in the case of measurement paths of 1 m. The main advantage resides in the constant measuring force, which is maintained along the entire measuring path and in conjunction with continuous scanning of inclined measurement surfaces. The measuring device contains a closed flexible drive which is driven via at least one deflecting roller (3) by a motor (4) with a measuring system (5). The flexible drive (2) contains two energy storage systems (7, 9) for producing a measuring force. A measuring transducer (12) and the motor measuring transducer (5) are connected to a computer (11) with pulse difference control. <IMAGE>
