[Also in Division B7] A towbar 10 for a trailer 11 having an over-run braking system (not shown) includes first and second members 13, 14, relatively movable to shorten the towbar 10 when the trailer 11 over-runs a tractor 12 or other towing vehicle, and a link 17 for transferring part of the trailer weight to the rear wheels of the tractor 12. The link 17 may be pivoted at 19 to a lug 20 releasably clamped to the second member 14, and connected to a tractor power lift (not shown) through a hitch 15 including a chain 16 and connector 24. A strut 18 is pivoted at 22 to the link 17 and located at its forward end on a towing pin 23. On operating the power lift for weight transfer, the connector 24 tends to turn the link 17 anticlockwise (Fig. 2) on the lug 20, avoiding the tendency to draw the member 14 forwards to cause braking. Alternatively, Fig. 5 (not shown), the device may be permanently mounted on the towbar (10X), with the strut (18X) pivoted to the rearward end of the first member (13X). |
