PURPOSE:To stabilize a seal ring of internally oblong shape at all times and prevent the occurrence of a whirl phenomenon by setting an angle between the major axis of the seal ring and a horizontal line, depending upon the position of a locking pin. CONSTITUTION:The major axis of a seal ring 22 having an oblong internal shape is made to have an angle 0 of 5 deg. to 45 deg. with a horizontal line. The seal ring 22 is capable of free motion within a gland seal in both axial and radial directions, but so supported as to be locked. A locking pin 12 is at a position turned 90 deg. in a direction reverse to the rotation axis of the seal ring 22, viewed from the direction of gravity. According to the aforesaid constitution, the seal ring 22 does not cause a whirl phenomenon, and always operates stably, though the locking pin 12 is located at the position turned 90 deg. in the reverse direction of the rotation axis from the direction of gravity.
