PURPOSE:To recover the sharpness of a grindstone in nicely regenerated state, in a process of dressing a grindstone including ultra-abrasive grains by finishing a process of dressing when the newest value of a ratio of the tangential component of a dressing resistance to the normal component of the same conforms to the immediately preceding value of the ratio. CONSTITUTION:Out of a dressing resistance acting between a grindstone and a dresser, the tangential component Ft in relation to a grinding surface and the normal component Fn in relation to the same are detected by piezo-electric element 12a-12d and by piezo-electric element 13a to 13d respectively, each of those components is added in each of adder circuits 21a, and 21b, and subjected to D conversion by means of A/D converters 22a and 22b so as to obtain Ft/Fn by an arithmetic circuit 23. Then, the newest value DC of component ratio Ft/Fn and the immediately preceding value DH read out of a memory circuit are compared with each other in a comparator circuit 26, and respective motors 3 and 7 are stopped by means of a motor drive circuit 27 and the dressing process is finished when the relationship DC=DH is achieved. Thus the sharpness of a grindstone can be recovered in nicely regenerated state and any excessive wear of the grindstone and the dresser can be prevented.
