PURPOSE:To manufacture a magnetic material having high wear resistance and free-cutting at a low cost by mixing powder of a metallic magnetic material such as pure iron with nonmetallic fine powder of Al2O3 or the like and sintering the powdery mixture under pressure with a hot isostatic pressing (HIP) device. CONSTITUTION:Powder of a metallic magnetic material such as pure iron, silicon steel or an Fe-Ni alloy as a base material is mixed with about 0.5-10wt% nonmetallic fine powder of an oxide such as Al2O3 or ZrO2, a nitride such as TiN, a carbide or the like. The pref. particle size of the magnetic powder is <=about 200 mesh and that of the fine powder is <=about 300 mesh. The powdery mixture is filled into a metal vessel or capsule, which is then degassed to about 10<-5>Torr, perfectly sealed and held at a high temp. of >=about 800 deg.C under a high pressure of >=about 500atm for >=about 1hr with an HIP device. The resulting sintered body is subjected to treatment fit for the magnetic material such as magnetic annealing. A high density magnetic material contg. uniformly dispersed hard fine powder of Al2O3 or the like and having high wear resistance and free-cutting is manufactured.
