PURPOSE:To prevent the generation of defective transfer or dirt on a transfer material even if a transfer material whose characteristics are easily changed is used by earthing a shield of a transfer electrostatic charger through a voltage generating element and electrically connecting the voltage generating element with a guide member for the transfer material. CONSTITUTION:A transfer material is supplied to a toner image formed on an image carrier 1 through the guide member 2 and the transfer charger 3 is driven by a high-voltage power supply 5 for corona discharging to transfer a toner image. The shield 3a of the charger 3 is earthed through the voltage generating element 4 and the conductive guide member 2 is connected to the element 4, so that a voltage with the same polarity as that of transfer corona is impressed also on the guide member 2 by the element 4. Even if a wet transfer material reduced in resistance is supplied, a charge applied to the transfer material is not leaked to the guide member 2, so that the generation of defective transfer can be prevented.
