PURPOSE:To enhance detection sensitivity, to reduce the variation in the detection sensitivity and to enhance resolving power, by a method wherein the first and second laser beams are respectively polarized vertically and horizontally by the first and second 1/2 wavelength plates and these polarized beams are brought to parallel beams by a polarizing beam splitter. CONSTITUTION:The first laser beam 3 oscillated from the first pulse laser 1 is split by a half mirror 4. The beam transmitted through the half mirror 4 is vertically polarized by a 1/2 wavelength plate 6 to be incident to a polarizing beam splitter 8 through a 90 deg. prism 9. The second laser beam 5 from the second pulse laser 2 reflected from the mirror 4 is horizontally polarized by a 1/2 wavelength plate 7 to be incident to the beam splitter 8. Then, the laser beam 3 is moved by the prism 9 and the laser beams 3, 5 are brought to parallel beams separated by a minute distance by the beam splitter 8. The reverse Stokes-Raman beam 13 generated in the part of a specimen cell passes through a detector 17 and a spectroscope 8 and only a vertical polarized beam component is detected.
