PURPOSE:To obtain the titled colorless and transparent compound useful as an intermediate for synthetic fibers, etc., in high yield without causing gelling phenomenon of a reaction mixture, by reacting dimethyl phthalates with benzyl alcohol in the presence of a specific catalyst while heating. CONSTITUTION:Dimethyl phthalates and benzyl alcohol, preferably in an amount of 1-25mol based on 1mol dimethyl phthalates are heated using a catalyst consisting of a titanium compound and/or tin compound to afford the aimed compound. The heating temperature is 140-250 deg.C, preferably 160-230 deg.C. A titanium compound, e.g. alpha-type titanium hydroxide, ammonium titanyl oxalate, etc., and tin compound, e.g. stannous acetate, etc., are cited as specific examples of the above-mentioned catalyst. The amount thereof used is 0.001-1.0pt.wt. expressed in terms of titanium or tin atom based on 100pts.wt. dimethyl phthalates. |
