PURPOSE:To always attain excellent separation independently of environment, especially humidity, by reducing a bias to be impressed on a humidity absorbing electrode at least when there is no transfer material near a separating device provided with an destaticizing electrode and the humidity absorbing electrode. CONSTITUTION:The separating device 4 consisting of the destaticizing electrode 5 held between insulating members 4a, 4b is arranged on the downstream side of a transfer electrostatic charger 4 and the humidity absorbing electrode 6 is arranged near the tip of the insulating member 4b. A charge having polarity reverse to that to be applied at the time of transferring an image to a passing transfer material is applied to both the electrodes 5, 6 respectively from high voltage power supplies 7, 8 to accelerate separating functions. A bias is impressed on the electrode 6 only the period that the transfer material passes the upper part of the device 4 by a synchronizing signal generating circuit, and when no transfer material exists in the separation position, bias impression is stopped. Even if operation is continued for a long period, the potential rise of the electrode 6 can be checked and stable separating action can be obtained.
