ELECTROCHROMIC DISPLAY ELEMENT

PURPOSE:To stabilize counter electrode potential and to obtain a long life display element by using a carbon fiber fabric having a polyaniline film imparted with electrical conductivity by doping of anion to the surface for a counter electrode material layer of an electrochromic display element. CONSTITUTION:The electrochromic material layer 3 is provided via a display electrode 2 consisting of ITO on the inside surface of a transparent glass plate 1 on a display side and display electrodes 4 fractionated to segments are formed. The counter electrode material layer 7 is provided via an electrode 6 on the inside surface of a counter substrate 5 to form a counter electrode 8 and the substrates are disposed to confront each other via a spacer 9. An electrolyte 10 is sealed between the two electrodes 4 and 8. Polyaniline is used for the counter electrode material layer 3 and the anine which is the same as or analogous to the anine component of the electrolyte, for example, ClO4 or the like is used. The amt. thereof to be added is so selected according to the kind of the electrochromic material of the display electrode that the potential difference therefrom decreases to 0. The carbon fiber fabric having a prescribed specific surface area and thickness is used and is stuck onto the counter electrode 6 by a conductive adhesive agent. The life is extended and the potential of the counter electrode is stabilized according to such constitution.
