PURPOSE:To enhance the processing speed of an automatic processing apparatus, by method wherein a window limiting a work line detection processing region to a picked up image taken in this time is set to a position surrounding a work line position detected and stored in an image taken in last time. CONSTITUTION:A signal processing apparatus having detected and stored a welding start point continuously takes in a new picked-up image fi (i=1, 2,...) but sets line detection limit processing region (window) W to the image Fi. The window W is set on the basis of the position of the welding line detected and stored in the image Fi-1 taken in last time so that the center thereof reaches said position. The processing apparatus repeatedly detects the position of a light cutting line in an x-direction in succession as the bright part equal to or more than the light cutting line extraction brightness threshold value preliminarily provided with respect to the image data present in the window W to form the position data of the slit beam image, and detects and stores the position of a refractive point as the position of the welding line 2. There after, this operation is repeated until a welding finish point is detected. As mentioned above, since a detection processing region region is limited, a light cutting line detection processing time can be shortened.
