PURPOSE:To improve durability by forming the silicon carbide protective film of a recording medium formed by laminating and disposing a magnetic recording layer consisting of a thin magnetic film, silicon carbide protective film and oil lubricating layer successively on a nonmagnetic substrate to a specific apparent density. CONSTITUTION:The silicon carbide protective film of the thin film magnetic recording medium formed by disposing the silicon carbide protective film and the oil lubricating layer on the magnetic recording layer which consists of the thin magnetic film and is formed on the nonmagnetic substrate is formed to have the apparent density (rho) ranging 2.91-2.98g/cm<3>. Such protective film is formed by, for example, sputtering, etc. The protective film having rho in said range has the adequate ruggedness to prevent the starvation of the lubricating oil provided thereon by sliding with a head and decreases the generation of worn powder of the protective film in the boundary lubricating region which appears locally during the sliding with the head. The durability of the thin film magnetic recording medium is thereby improved.
