1,263,760. Treating polyolefin articles. AVISUN CORP. 10 Oct., 1969 [11 Oct., 1968], No. 49793/69. Heading C3P. [Also in Divisions C6-C7] Shaped polyolefin articles are treated, prior to the deposition of metallic coatings, with a ketone which is dispersible, emulsifiable or at least slightly soluble in water, by contacting to such an extent that the ketone penetrates the surface of the polyolefin article and relieves strains therein. The ketone may be acetone or methyl ethyl ketone applied in the liquid or vapour state. The article may subsequently be treated with a solution of chromium trioxide or an alkali metal chromate in a strong mineral acid, and subjected to vacuum metallizing or chemical- and electro-plating. Specified polymers are polymers and copolymers of ethylene, propylene, butene-1, 3-methylbutene-1 and 4- methylpentene-1, optionally with minor proportions of functional monomers such as acrylonitrile, methylmethacrylate, ethyl acrylate and vinyl acetate. Examples describe the treatment of articles made from (1 and 2) polypropylene, (3) ethylene/propylene copolymer and (4) a composition of polypropylene, t-octylphenol/ ethylene oxide condensate, dilauryl thiodipropionate and titanium dioxide.
|
