PURPOSE:To prevent a purchaser who purchases a package from swallowing metal by mistake by detecting whether or not the package contains the metal and discriminating between a package which contains the metal and a package which contains no metal. CONSTITUTION:If an article contains metal, the metal detector generates a metal detection signal when the article passes through a chute 22. The detection 6, therefore, decides whether or not the metal detection signal is generated and drives an air cylinder when there is the metal detection signal to rotate a chute plate to a dotted-line position. Then when the article is supplied to a packaging device 4, it is distributed to a defective storage part 48 by the chute plate 43 which already rotates to a solid-line position. Further, when the detector 6 judges that there is no metal detection signal, the chute plate 43 is held at the position shown by a solid line and when the article is supplied to the device 4, the package is sent onto a carrying-out conveyor 44.
