PURPOSE:To prevent an electrochromic coloring layer from swelling and being dissolved in an electrolyte and to prolong the repetitive use life of an EC display element by providing an ion-transmissive protection film on the electrochromic coloring layer. CONSTITUTION:This electrochromic display element is equipped with a transparent electrode 3 which is formed on a substrate 1, the electrochromic coloring layer 4 which is formed on the transparent electrode, a high polymer thin film layer 5 which is formed on the coloring layer and contains an electrolyte, a counter electrode 7 facing the transparent electrode 3 at an interval, and the electrolyte 6 put between the display electrode 9a and counter electrode 7. The high polymer thin film layer 5 which is formed on the electrochromic coloring layer 4 and contains the electrolyte prevents the electrochromic coloring layer 4 from contacting the electrolyte 6 and transmits ions necessary for electrochemical oxidation reduction to enable the EC display element to operate.
