Prepn. of (CH3)2C=CHCHO, useful as inter, in synthesis of natural prods. or pharmaceuticals, e.g. citral, beta-ionone, 2-methyl-2-hepten-6-one and chrysanthemic acid, by catalytic gas-phase dehydrogenation of (CH3)2C=CHCH2OH at 150-600 degrees C, takes lace in presence of aliphatic or aromatic organic N-, P- or S-cpds. with nucleophilic props., pref. used in 0.1-2wt.% concn., pref. consisting of MENH2, urotropine, thiophene, PPh3 or NH3 gas, and/or basic metal oxides, pref. BaO, CaO or MgO, used as dehydrogenation catalyst supports or additives.
