PURPOSE:To aim at preventing a compression-ignition type internal combustion engine from offering nonconformity such as secondary injection or the like by providing a check-valve having a flat valve body in a high pressure fuel passage. CONSTITUTION:When a plunger 5 rises from the bottom dead center to close a fuel suction and discharge hole 7, high pressure fuel in a high pressure chamber 6 is led through a high pressure passage 25 and injected into a cylinder from a nozzle 19. In this phase, a check valve is opened to prevent the stream of fuel from being hindered. When the plunger 5 further rises, a fuel control groove 10 communicates with the fuel suction and discharge hole 7 so that fuel in the high pressure chamber 6 is relieved into a fuel sump 8, and therefore, the injection of fuel from the nozzle 19 is inhibited. At this time, the check valve 33 is closed so as to prevent fuel from counterflowing, so that the residual pressure in the high pressure fuel passage 25 is held at a high value, and further since the valve element 33 of the check valve 33 is flat, the dead volume of the high pressure fuel passage 25 is reduced to aim at improving the injection characteristic during low speed running.
